Studeerde aan de Academies van Roeselare en Brussel. Bij het uitbreken van de Eerste Wereldoorlog vluchtte hij naar Nederland, waar hij onderdak vond in Nuenen. Vandaar uit bezocht hij Zeeland, dat diepe indruk op hem maakte en sindsdien kwam hij elk jaar terug om op Schouwen en Walcheren te schilderen. Zijn vrouw, Kaatje de Feiter, was afkomstig uit Renesse. In 1930 werd hij directeur van de pas opgerichte Kunstacademie te Oostende. Na 1940 werkte hij weer in zijn geboortestad. Alfons behoort tot de Vlaamse expressionisten. In zijn jonge jaren maakte hij symbolische werken, later vooral landschappen, stadsgezichten (Brugge, Veere, Zierikzee) en portretten. Zijn kleur is licht en helder als bij Ensor, de verf is dun en in kleine arceringen opgebracht. Aan zijn werk is in Roeselare een speciaal museum gewijd.
