De compositie is niet realistisch bedoeld: op één schilderij zijn bloemen afgebeeld die in verschillende seizoenen bloeien en ook de steellengte klopt dikwijls niet. Hoofdzaak was blijkbaar een harmonische kleurrijke compositie met veel soorten. Het veelvuldig voorkomen van zeldzame en exotische bloemen geeft wel een aardig beeld van de toenmalige rijkdom van de Middelburgse tuinen. De boeketten worden dikwijls verlevendigd door zorgvuldig geschilderde insecten. Ook zijn enkele fruitstillevens van hem bekend.
