Studeerde rechten te Leiden, doch behaalde te Orleans (16 jan. 1699) zijn doctorstitel, waarna hij zich als advocaat te Middelburg vestigde. Juni 1700 werd hij Raad in het Hof van Vlaanderen, later werd hij benoemd tot secretaris van Middelburg. Bij de Zeeuwse twisten na de dood van Willem III (1702) was hij een der stoutmoedigste regenten van de bovendrijvende partij. In 1711 werd hij benoemd tot pensionaris van Middelburg, commissaris van de wisselbank en secretaris van de Staten van Zeeland, voor welke functie hij zich bekwaam toonde.
