Forse kruidachtige plant met melksap, grote lichtblauwe bloemen en een stevige penwortel. In het rivierengebied algemeen in dijkgraslanden. Komt op de Zeeuwse dijken minder voor, maar ontbreekt hier niet geheel. Soms ook verwilderd, omdat de plant veel geteeld wordt voor de bladeren (Brussels lof, witlof; geselecteerd uit cichorei) en de wortels (surrogaatkoffie; [[peekoffie]]). Familie van de andijvie (C. endívia) Cichorei wordt voor het eerst vermeld in 1687 (Brussel) als groente, waarvan &#039;de jonge uytspruytsels veel ghesocht tot salaet&#039; (uit: Den Verstandigen Hovenier over de twelf maenden van &#039;t jaer; P. Niland). In de 18&lt;sup&gt;e&lt;/sup&gt; en 19&lt;sup&gt;e&lt;/sup&gt; eeuw werd niet alleen uit Flakkee maar vooral ook uit Oost Zeeuws-Vlaanderen (Hulst) cichoreiteelt vermeld voor export naar België. Na de afgang van de [[meekrap]] werden verscheidene meestoven tot cichoreidrogers omgebouwd, o.a. te Nieuwdorp. Die te Capelle bij Zierikzee staat er zelfs nog als gebouw. Witlof als groenteteelt is pas na de tweede wereldoorlog in Zeeland tot ontwikkeling gekomen.
