Als kapitein nam hij in 1760 deel aan de expeditie tegen oproerige negerslaven op Berbice, bij welke gelegenheid hij gewond raakte; eerst in 1763 keerde hij terug. In 1772 werd hij, inmiddels tot kolonel bevorderd, lid van de Hooge krijgsraad te &#039;s Gravenhage. In 1787 werd hij bevorderd tot generaal-majoor, en werd hij in 1793, tijdens de oorlog met Frankrijk, als luitenant-generaal belast met het bevel over de manschappen in Zeeland; op 3 februari 1795 bood hij te Breskens, op last van de Staten van Zeeland, aan Michaud de capitulatie van het gewest aan. Kort daarop werd hij gepensioneerd, waarna hij zich achtereenvolgens te Montfoort en Utrecht vestigde.
