Het dier, ongeveer zo groot als een kalkoen, kon niet vliegen en was dus een gemakkelijke buit voor de opvarenden van schepen die Mauritius aandeden om verse victualiën in te nemen. Enkele exemplaren werden naar Europa meegebracht en afgebeeld op schilderijen en gravures.
