Een idealistische vriendengroep van jonge twintigers wil zich afzetten tegen de maatschappij maar verliest gaandeweg zijn idealen zodra eenieder in het maatschappelijk leven zijn weg vinden moet. Het speelt zich voor een deel af in Veere, waar de schrijver (Grönloh bezocht Veere zelf in 1908) Japi ontmoet die de uitvreter wordt genoemd. Wie Japi was bleef lang onzeker omdat Grönloh zelf altijd beweerd had dat de figuur niet op een bestaand persoon was geënt. Uit twee teruggevonden brieven uit 1908 bleek dat het gedrag van de schrijver zelf tijdens zijn bezoek aan Veere veel overeenkomsten vertoonde met dat van Japi. Van de bekendste zin uit ''de uitvreter'' is namelijk wel bekend aan wie deze ontleend werd.
