Groeit optimaal in stuivende duinen en in zandverstuivingen in het binnenland. De wortelstokken kunnen vele meters lang worden. Hierdoor wordt het stuivende zand vastgelegd. Is samen met het biestarwegras een pioniersplant tijdens de primaire duinvorming. De helm weet zich in niet meer stuivende duingraslandvegetaties vaak nog lang te handhaven, maar komt dan meestal niet meer in bloei. In Zeeland is de helm een algemene plant in de duinen. Wordt daar ten behoeve van de zeewering en de vastlegging van de duinen veel aangeplant. Komt verder nog op een aantal plaatsen voor in het Veerse Meer en de Grevelingen. In dit laatste gebied zijn na de afsluiting van het Brouwershavensche Gat op de drooggevallen platen met behulp van helm vele stuifschermen aangelegd om verwaaiing van deze platen tegen te gaan.<br /> <br /> <br /> AUTEUR<br /> <br /> K.F.
