Schrijver. Emigreerde naar de Verenigde Staten, waar hij studeerde aan de Cornell en Harvard Universiteiten en vervolgens carrière maakte als journalist (1924, The Baltimore Sun), radiocommentator, gastdocent aan verschillende universiteiten en auteur van een aantal populair-wetenschappelijke boeken, die nu wat in de vergetelheid raken, maar destijds in Amerika grote opgang maakten en in vele talen werden vertaald. Met zijn boeken heeft hij er veel toe bijgedragen de Amerikanen ervan te overtuigen dat de Nederlanders niet &#039;een volk van klompen, molens en tulpenteelt&#039; maar door hun geschiedenis, hun scheepsbouw, hun ontdekkingsreizen en hun kunst een belangrijke factor waren geweest in de ontwikkeling van Europa en de wereld. Bekend zijn o.a.: The fall of the Dutch Republic (1912); The rise of the Dutch Kingdom (1915); The story of Mankind (1921); The life and times of Joh. Seb. Bach (1926); Man, the miracle maker (1928); The life and times of Rembrandt van Rijn (1931) en The Arts of mankind (1938). Het aardige was dat hij deze boeken dikwijls met eigen pentekeningen illustreerde. Ondanks zijn &#039;amerikanisering&#039; bleef Van Loon zich Nederlander voelen. Hij heeft, dank zij zijn grote kring van relaties, nog tijdens de laatste wereldoorlog veel voor zijn oude vaderland gedaan. Van Loon kwam vaak naar Nederland terug, waar zijn hart hem speciaal naar Veere trok. Tussen 1927 en 1932 woonde hij daar aan de Kade in het huis de Houttuyn.
