Hugo volgde op uitdrukkelijk verzoek van zijn vader een opleiding als onderwijzer en deed de boekhouding van de winkel. Omdat hij van de lichting 1914 was zou hij vanwege de mobilisatie uiteindelijk drie jaar dienstplicht vervullen gedurende de Eerste Wereldoorlog. Al vroeg wist Kingmans dat hij journalist wilde worden en al op zestienjarige leeftijd schreef hij een verhaal over het Beleg van Zierikzee in 1576. Na zijn dienstplicht was hij als journalist werkzaam voor de Stichtse Courant in Utrecht, Onze Courant in Zwolle en als redacteur van de Nieuwe Provinciale Groninger Courant in Groningen, waar hij vanaf 1919 werkzaam was. Hugo volgde op uitdrukkelijk verzoek van zijn vader een opleiding als onderwijzer en deed de boekhouding van de winkel. Omdat hij van de lichting 1914 was zou hij vanwege de mobilisatie uiteindelijk drie jaar dienstplicht vervullen gedurende de Eerste Wereldoorlog. Al vroeg wist Kingmans dat hij journalist wilde worden en al op zestienjarige leeftijd schreef hij een verhaal over het Beleg van Zierikzee in 1576. Na zijn dienstplicht was hij als journalist werkzaam voor de Stichtse Courant in Utrecht, Onze Courant in Zwolle en als redacteur van de Nieuwe Provinciale Groninger Courant in Groningen, waar hij vanaf 1919 werkzaam was.
