De grootvader van Johan van Baerland, Matheus Michielszn. van Baerland, was hoogst waarschijnlijk de broeder van Willem Baerland, waarvan Jacob van Baerland een kleinzoon was. Hij was ook ambachtsheer in Wemeldinge en Dirksland. Reeds voor 1634 of niet lang daarna zal zijn vertrek uit de streek, waarbij hij de oudste charters van Zuid-Beveland met zich voerde, hebben plaats gehad. Als heer van Baarland tekent voor hem in 1638 de heer van Heumen, baron van Groesbeek, vicomte d'Aublain, die gehuwd was met zijn dochter Magdalena. Van Jacob wordt getuigd, dat hij uit een geslacht was 'dat te midden van een verdorven volk nooit met ketterijen is besmet geweest'. Deze regels komen voor in de opdracht aan de toen 82 jarige en te Antwerpen levende grijsaard van Stanhurstius' omstreeks 1660 verschenen `Quatuor Novissima'.
