Toen hij een slechte vertaling van Dickens' werk ‘Dombey en Zoon’ had gemaakt en uitgaf, heeft Isaac Jacob Lion in een felle brochure, getiteld ‘Boudewijn en De Tijd, nieten zonder loterij’ (Amsterdam 1849) met diens letterkundige aspiraties afgerekend. Naast diverse bijdragen in almanakken en tijdschriften publiceerde Van der Vliet ‘De Speler, een berijmd verhaal’, ‘Jonge Juffrouwen’, ‘Beelden en Schaduwen’,  ‘Levensschets van Z.M.
