Hij studeerde van 1963-1966 aan de Academie voor Beeldende Vorming Middeloo te Amersfoort en volgde aansluitend een jaar de lessen op de Academie St. Joost te Breda. Van in 1967-1968 verbleef hij in de Verenigde Staten, waar hij bij de Snake River Pottery in Idaho werkte. Nadien kwam hij gemiddeld een paar keer per jaar in de Verenigde Staten. In 1969 vestigde hij zich in Middelburg, waar hij docent handvaardigheid op de Stedelijke Scholengemeenschap (later Nehalennia) werd. In zijn ruime woonhuis (een 17de-eeuws pakhuis) had hij diverse atelierruimtes, waar hij opstellingen kon uitproberen. Zijn werk is zowel figuratief (koppen en afdrukken van lichaamsdelen) als abstract. Jan van Leeuwen had talrijke tentoonstellingen, zowel in Nederland als daarbuiten. Daarnaast bekleedde hij diverse bestuursfuncties en was een inspirator in de Zeeuwse kunstwereld. Vandaar dat na zijn vroege dood de Jan van Leeuwen Stichting, die van 1994 tot 2011 tentoonstellingen van hedendaagse beeldende kunst in de Zeeuwse Bibliotheek organiseerde, naar hem genoemd werd. <br /> De vrouw van Jan, [[Henny Schrijver]], is eveneens beeldend kunstenaar.
