Staten); sinds 1884 officieel: Watch Tower Bible and Tract Society (Wachttoren-Bijbel- en Tractaatgenootschap) met na 1909 hoofdkantoor in New York. De eerste Jehova&#039;s Getuigen kwamen enige jaren voor de eerste wereldoorlog in ons land. In 1926 verscheen hun blad de Wachttoren in onze taal; in 1975 hadden zij in ons land 286 gemeenten. Bekend zijn hun congressen, waaraan duizenden deelnemen. Reeds voor de tweede wereldoorlog zijn zij hun evangelisatiewerk in Zeeland begonnen, maar tot gemeentevorming is het pas na deze wereldstrijd gekomen en wel in Vlissingen. Van daaruit werd in 1949 een gemeente te Middelburg opgericht. Geleidelijk aan werden ook in andere Zeeuwse plaatsen Koninkrijkszalen (zoals zij hun plaatsen van samenkomst noemen) geopend, nl. te Goes, Zierikzee, Terneuzen, Axel en Oostburg. Aan deze 7 gemeenten waren in 1980 ongeveer 700 actieve getuigen van Jehova verbonden. De beweging is sterk gericht op de spoedige komst van Christus en op het duizendjarige rijk, dat, volgens hen, reeds een aanvang heeft genomen. Van de gevestigde kerken moet men niet veel weten. De paus wordt gezien als de anti-christ. De protestantse kerken komen er niet veel beter af. Men verwerpt het leerstuk van de Triniteit. Tegenover de staat neemt de beweging een zeer critische houding aan. Staten worden gezien als scheppingen van de Satan; men verzet zich tegen de dienstplicht. Over de belastingplicht denkt men tegenwoordig iets milder. Vanwege deze opvattingen zijn in de tweede wereldoorlog heel wat Jehova&#039;s Getuigen slachtoffer geworden van de concentratiekampen. De eerste Jehova&#039;s Getuigen kwamen enige jaren voor de eerste wereldoorlog in ons land. In 1926 verscheen hun blad de Wachttoren in onze taal; in 1975 hadden zij in ons land 286 gemeenten. Bekend zijn hun congressen, waaraan duizenden deelnemen. Reeds voor de tweede wereldoorlog zijn zij hun evangelisatiewerk in Zeeland begonnen, maar tot gemeentevorming is het pas na deze wereldstrijd gekomen en wel in Vlissingen. Van daaruit werd in 1949 een gemeente te Middelburg opgericht. Geleidelijk aan werden ook in andere Zeeuwse plaatsen Koninkrijkszalen (zoals zij hun plaatsen van samenkomst noemen) geopend, nl. te Goes, Zierikzee, Terneuzen, Axel en Oostburg. Aan deze 7 gemeenten waren in 1980 ongeveer 700 actieve getuigen van Jehova verbonden. De beweging is sterk gericht op de spoedige komst van Christus en op het duizendjarige rijk, dat, volgens hen, reeds een aanvang heeft genomen. Van de gevestigde kerken moet men niet veel weten. De paus wordt gezien als de anti-christ. De protestantse kerken komen er niet veel beter af. Men verwerpt het leerstuk van de Triniteit. Tegenover de staat neemt de beweging een zeer critische houding aan. Staten worden gezien als scheppingen van de Satan; men verzet zich tegen de dienstplicht. Over de belastingplicht denkt men tegenwoordig iets milder. Vanwege deze opvattingen zijn in de tweede wereldoorlog heel wat Jehova&#039;s Getuigen slachtoffer geworden van de concentratiekampen.
