Deze niet gedoopte kinderen werden vroeger (o.a. 15de/16de eeuw) aan de rand van het kerkhof, dichtbij de gewijde grond, aan de aarde toevertrouwd. De katholieke kerk stond niet toe dat ongedoopte kinderen in gewijde grond werden begraven, omdat zij niet in de hemel kwamen. Op instigatie van de paus werd dit kerkelijke standpunt in 2006 verlaten. In Zeeland zijn vier kinderpotten (geen officiële benaming) gevonden: drie in de bodem van het kerkhof te [[Sint Anna ter Muiden]] (West-Zeeuws-Vlaanderen) en een in de begraafplaats van het voormalige dorp [[Welzinge]].
