De eerste kerk van Koudekerke was waarschijnlijk gewijd aan St. Maarten en had twee bijaltaren, namelijk voor het Heilig Kruis en de Maagd Maria. Al vroeg moet het een kerkdorp van betekenis zijn geweest, want in 1322 schonk graaf Willem de Goede de kosterij van de kerk aan Pieter Dankaertszoon. De kerk I was toen dus grafelijk bezit, wat niet van de heerlijkheid zelf gezegd kan worden. In 1311 was de ambachtsheerlijkheid, afkomstig van Heer Jan van Haamstede, door graaf Willem III aan zijn neef, de bekende Witte, gegeven. De oude dorpskerk van Koudekerke verkeerde in de 15de eeuw waarschijnlijk al in slechte staat. Toen in 1468 het ambacht Koudekerke, tegelijk met het ambacht Haamstede, door de prins van Gruuthuse werd aangekocht, heeft deze er een nieuwe kerk gebouwd. Tijdens de bouw van de tweede kerk, in het laatste kwart van de 15de eeuw, was er nog geen gevaar voor ondergang, want in 1475 lag de zeedijk nog drie kilometer van het dorp verwijderd. Tegen het midden van de 16de eeuw ging de toestand snel achteruit; vóór 1700 ging Koudekerke vrijwel geheel verloren. De kerk is in 1583 afgebroken. Alleen de toren liet men staan en diende als baken voor de scheepvaart. Zierikzee, dat veel belang had bij de scheepvaart op de Oosterschelde nam het onderhoud van de toren op zich, zelfs tot in de 19de eeuw. In 1794 werd op kosten van Zierikzee de buitenkant geheel hersteld. In 1867 werd door de gemeente Haamstede afstand gedaan van het eigendomsrecht over de toren. Het bezit ging over naar de Rijksdienst der Domeinen. Op initiatief van jonkheer C.A. van Citters, burgemeester van Noordgouwe, vond in 1935 een restauratie plaats. Omstreeks 1965 is de toren opnieuw gerestaureerd omdat er in de Tweede Wereldoorlog veel schade aan was ontstaan. Na deze restauratie stond het Rijk de toren aan de gemeente Haamstede in bruikleen af op voorwaarde dat deze voor het onderhoud zou zorgen. Eind jaren negentig van de twintigste eeuw is de toren opnieuw gerestaureerd en ingericht als bezoekerscentrum van Natuurmonumenten. Naar aanleiding van een niet gerealiseerd plan (2010-2012) om de Plompe Toren en directe omgeving cultuurhistorisch aantrekkelijker en verkeersluwer te maken, is bureau- en booronderzoek gedaan naar de archeologische waarde van de locatie. De positie van de kerk, zoals die in 1923 door architect Johan Hoogenboom was gereconstrueerd, kon worden bevestigd.  </div></td><td class="diff-marker"></td><td style="background-color: #f8f9fa; color: #202122; font-size: 88%; border-style: solid; border-width: 1px 1px 1px 4px; border-radius: 0.33em; border-color: #eaecf0; vertical-align: top; white-space: pre-wrap;"><div>Aan de binnenzijde van de zeedijk, tussen Schelphoek en Burghsluis rest nog de van ver zichtbare &#039;Plompe toren&#039; van het voormalige dorp dat tussen 1550 en 1600 grotendeels werd buitengedijkt (de inlaagdijk uit 1581 kwam langs de kerk te liggen, nu zeedijk). De eerste kerk van Koudekerke was waarschijnlijk gewijd aan St. Maarten en had twee bijaltaren, namelijk voor het Heilig Kruis en de Maagd Maria. Al vroeg moet het een kerkdorp van betekenis zijn geweest, want in 1322 schonk graaf Willem de Goede de kosterij van de kerk aan Pieter Dankaertszoon. De kerk I was toen dus grafelijk bezit, wat niet van de heerlijkheid zelf gezegd kan worden. In 1311 was de ambachtsheerlijkheid, afkomstig van Heer Jan van Haamstede, door graaf Willem III aan zijn neef, de bekende Witte, gegeven. De oude dorpskerk van Koudekerke verkeerde in de 15de eeuw waarschijnlijk al in slechte staat.
