Thans komt hij algemeen voor op verwaarloosde muren in oude binnensteden en op gemetselde duikers en vergelijkbare bouwwerken. Een viertal soorten komt voor als akkeronkruid: kleine leeuwebek (L. minor), spiesleeuwebek (L. elatine), eironde leeuwebek (L. sptiria) en blauwe leeuwebek (L. arvénsis).<br /> Door het gebruik van herbiciden en het schonen van zaaizaad zijn deze soorten sterk achteruitgegaan. De blauwe leeuwebek is in ons land waarschijnlijk geheel uitgestorven.
