Terwijl zijn oudste werk vooral natuurpoëzie was, spreekt er sinds 1930 een sterke bewogenheid uit om het tijdsgebeuren, zoals in de anti-oorlogsgedichten ‘Aanklacht’ (1930). Na een socialistische, communistische en protestants-christelijke periode werd hij nationaal-socialist; tijdens de tweede Wereldoorlog was hij waarnemend burgemeester van Veere, waar hij sinds zijn huwelijk met de schrijfster Johanna Verstraate (ps.Dignate Robbertz) was gaan wonen. Tevens schreef hij gedichten voor het geïllustreerde weekblad de ''Katholieke Illustratie.''<ref>Katholieke Illustratie (1940) pag. 1159, 1703, 1855.</ref> Ook na de oorlog heeft hij nog een aantal dichtbundels geschreven.
