In het onbedijkte gebied bezinken bij overstroming de grovere componenten langs de oevers en daar vindt dan een sterkere ophoging plaats dan verderop. Het hangt ten dele van de verhouding grof-fijn sediment in het overstromingswater af of sterk ontwikkelde dan wel zwak ontwikkelde oeverwallen zullen ontstaan. Na drooglegging worden de topografische verschillen nog versterkt door differentiële inklinking. Bij inpoldering en ontginning worden de kleinere kreken gedicht met de hun flankerende oeverwallen.
