Hij komt algemeen voor op vochtige voedselrijke grond. Minder algemeen is de zoutmijdende pitrus (<del style="font-weight: bold; text-decoration: none;">J. </del>effusus). Deze soort komt alleen voor in gebieden met relatief zoet polderwater (<del style="font-weight: bold; text-decoration: none;">bijv. </del>binnenduinrand, Zak van Zuid-Beveland, delen van Zeeuws-Vlaanderen). Nog zeldzamer is biezenknoppen <del style="font-weight: bold; text-decoration: none;">(J. subuliflorus)</del>, die vooral groeit op kalkarme vochtige zandgrond. In Zeeland vindt men deze soort plaatselijk in de binnenduinrand en het Zeeuws-Vlaamse zandgebied. Een vierde soort is de zeerus <del style="font-weight: bold; text-decoration: none;">(J. maritimus)</del>. Zij komt in Nederland weinig voor. In Zeeland vindt men haar regelmatig, met name in de Grevelingen en het Veerse Meer op brakke vochtige bodems. Van de soorten met een eindelingse bloeiwijze komen de greppelrus <del style="font-weight: bold; text-decoration: none;">(J. bufonius)</del>, zilte rus <del style="font-weight: bold; text-decoration: none;">(J. gerardii) </del>en de zomprus <del style="font-weight: bold; text-decoration: none;">(J. articulatus) </del>vrij algemeen voor. De greppelrus is een eenjarige plant die vooral voorkomt in pioniersituaties op open vochtige grond (paden, karresporen, rond drinkputten <del style="font-weight: bold; text-decoration: none;">e.d.</del>). Deze soort valt uiteen in een aantal onder soorten die moeilijk van elkaar te onderscheiden zijn, <del style="font-weight: bold; text-decoration: none;">o.a. </del>de duinrus (<del style="font-weight: bold; text-decoration: none;">J. </del>alpinoarticulatus <del style="font-weight: bold; text-decoration: none;">ssp</del>. <del style="font-weight: bold; text-decoration: none;">atricapillus</del>)<del style="font-weight: bold; text-decoration: none;">. </del>De zilte rus komt algemeen voor op vochtige zilte of brakke grond. De zomprus is kenmerkend voor zoete vochtige graslanden en moerassen. In zilte omgeving komt hij niet voor.
