Maas, juli 1933, Zeeuwse Bibliotheek, Beeldbank Zeeland, recordnr. 13129.]]<br /> Tot in de jaren 1950 waren er in veel Zeeuwse dorpen nog schaapherders die vanuit een schaapskooi met een kudde schapen langs dijken en bermen, over schorren en door ander niet intensief gecultiveerd terrein trokken. De schaapskooien hoorden meestal bij een boerderij. Er waren ‘enige honderden’ schaapskooien in Zeeland, ook wel schaapstal genoemd. Een schaapskooi op het schor werd schaepe- of schaopestelle genoemd. <br /> <br /> == Bouwstijl ==<br /> De meeste schaapskooien waren gebouwd in de stijl van een Zeeuwse boerderij: een zwart geteerde schuur met langs de randen witte randen zodat die rand ook in het donker zichtbaar was. De schaapskooi was tamelijk breed en lang, erg luchtig gebouwd en had een pannendak. Omdat de schapen veel frisse lucht nodig hebben, niet van warmte houden en ze in hun verblijf vrij dicht opeengepakt staan, waren er flinke kieren tussen de planken van de kooi. De Zeeuwse boeren hielden in de winter, de lammertijd, hun schapen in de kooi. In het verdronken [[Land van Saeftinghe]] waren de schaapskooien opgetrokken op dijkresten. De drie bekendste heetten de Noord, de Zuid en de Heuvel – het waren tevens namen voor de locaties waar de kooien stonden. Deze stellen waren tevens de woningen van de herders en weken qua bouw af van wat elders in Zeeland gebruikelijk was. De stellen van Saeftinghe werden hersteld met aangespoeld wrakhout.
