In Zeeland komen twee soorten voor. De bochtige smele (D.flexuósa), die algemeen voorkomt op heiden en in loof,- en naaldbossen op de zandgrond; in Zeeland in het zandgebied langs de Belgische grens en op enkele plaatsen in de duinen. De gewone smele (D. caespitósa) groeit vooral in vochtige graslanden en in bossen langs waterkanten. Komt in Zeeland slechts op enkele plaatsen voor.
