Zo was hij o.m. (mede)oprichter van het Instituut voor Vegetatie-onderzoek in Nederland (IVON), de Zuiderzeecommissie van de Ned. Botanische Vereniging en het Biologisch Station in Montpellier (1930), waar J. Braun Blanquet lange tijd de leiding had. Ook organiseerde De Leeuw het Internationaal Botanisch Congres (Amsterdam, 1936) en na W.O. II de heroprichting van de Association Internationale de Phytosociologie. Bovendien was hij betrokken bij de activiteiten van een aantal natuurbeschermingsorganisaties, zoals 'Natuurmonumenten', Contact-Commissie voor Natuur- en Landschapsbescherming en Stichting voor Wetenschappelijk Duinonderzoek. Zo was hij o.m. (mede)oprichter van het Instituut voor Vegetatie-onderzoek in Nederland (IVON), de Zuiderzeecommissie van de Ned. Botanische Vereniging en het Biologisch Station in Montpellier (1930), waar J. Braun Blanquet lange tijd de leiding had. Ook organiseerde De Leeuw het Internationaal Botanisch Congres (Amsterdam, 1936) en na W.O. II de heroprichting van de Association Internationale de Phytosociologie. Bovendien was hij betrokken bij de activiteiten van een aantal natuurbeschermingsorganisaties, zoals 'Natuurmonumenten', Contact-Commissie voor Natuur- en Landschapsbescherming en Stichting voor Wetenschappelijk Duinonderzoek. Door zijn eigenzinnige karakter botste zijn mening vaak met die van andere floristen en raakte hij in de 30-er jaren in een scherpe discussie gewikkeld met J.W. van Dieren, over vegetatiekundige inzichten.
