Verschillende bronnen verwijzen expliciet naar (Westelijk) Noord-Brabant, terwijl het ook voorkwam op IJsselmonde en gepraktiseerd werd in het Land van Cadzand. In West-Brabant werd de term ook gebruikt voor het tezamen fuiven van jongelui in een herberg, daar en op de Zuid-Hollandse eilanden ook wel voor winteravondvisite bij familieleden. Een afgeleide betekenis, bijvoorbeeld op Flakkee, was ‘samen zitten te keuvelen.’ In de betekenis van logeren kwam ‘winterneven ’ echter het meest voor. <br /> <br /> == Verspreiding in Zeeland ==<br /> In Zeeland moet het winterneven vrij algemeen zijn voorgekomen en hebben voortgeduurd tot in het eerste kwart van de twintigste eeuw. Vermoedelijk was het een van de vele tradities die in de tijd van de Eerste Wereldoorlog sterk werden teruggedrongen. Van Flakkee werd in 1933 vermeld dat het winterneven er nog bestond, maar sterk was verminderd en ook veranderd. Het Woordenboek der Zeeuwse dialecten, waarvoor vanaf de late jaren 1920 gegevens werden verzameld, noemt het een ‘thans verouderde’ gewoonte, ‘nog bij ouderen bekend.’ Dat laatste was althans het geval op heel Goeree-Overflakkee, Schouwen-Duiveland, St.-Philipsland, in de helft van de Thoolse dorpen en in slechts vier plaatsen op de Bevelanden. <br /> Dat suggereert dat het winterneven zijn oorsprong had en het meest verbreid was in het gebied van de herenboeren in Noord-Zeeland, de Zuid-Hollandse eilanden en Westelijk Brabant. Ook in het Land van Cadzand was de gewoonte echter bekend; ook daar waren veel grote boerenbedrijven. <br /> Het winterneven was bij uitstek een gelegenheid om, in een andere omgeving dan de eigen regio, rond te kijken naar het andere geslacht en eventueel ‘verkering op te doen.’ Van Schouwen-Duiveland werd vermeld dat verloofde stelletjes ook wel samen gingen ‘winterneven.’ De oudste vermelding in Zeeuwse streekkranten dateert van 2 februari 1861 en betreft de rubriek Gemengde Berigten van de Zierikzeesche Nieuwsbode.<br /> <br /> == Auteur ==<br /> -Jan Zwemer, 2020.<br /> <br /> == Bronnen ==<br /> *H.C.M.
